In this Project-based Learning unit, the students are facing a very realistic problem - a terror attack has just occurred to the local community. The local government requests the help of the students to solve a three part problem.
During the first two weeks of the unit, the students investigate who is responsible for the attack, what motivated the attack, and whether a second attack is likely.
In the second part of the unit, the students spend two weeks developing a briefing document for local officials that discusses the appropriate response to the attack and outlines ways in which security of the community can be enhanced.
The third portion of the unit lasts approximately 2 weeks. During this phase, the students develop a policy paper to provide guidance to local government officials on methods for outreach to improve relations between the terror country and the local community.
Through the five weeks of study, students are engaged in learning algebra, reading short stories, learning about global geography, politics, and human rights, and investigating physical science concepts relating to motion, force, and thermodynamics.
